Nestling in the foothills of the Himalayas, with the river Tawi flowing alongside, is the place that Raja Jambu Lochan discovered one day while he was on a hunting trip. Legend has it that he came upon a clearing where he saw a sight that left him wonderstruck. A tiger and a goat stood side-by-side, drinking water from the same place in the Tawi River. He was so struck by this unusual sight that he decided to build a city on this land where nonliving creature seemed to bear enmity towards each other. Little is known of Jammus subsequent history until, in 1730 AD, it came under the rule of the Dogra king, Raja Dhruv Deva

Katra
The shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi is one of the most visited pilgrim sites in India. Situated at a height of 5, 300 ft., the site is located inside a cave in a hill. This cave temple is at a distance of 61 kms from Jammu and the last 13 kms of the way have to be negotiated on foot by the yatris, as the devotees are called. Once at the entrance to the cave, the path turns into a narrow tunnel with a cold stream named the Charan Ganga running through it. The pilgrim has to wade through this to reach the sanctum sanctorum.

Patnitop

Ahknoor
Akhnoor is a beautiful town situated at a distance of 32 km from Jammu. The Chenab river meets the plain in Akhnoor, just north-west of Jammu. This was originally the route to Srinagar in the Moghul era. Jehangir, who died on the way to Kashmir, was temporarily buried at Chingas. Akhnoor is also related with the legend of Soni-Mahiwal. This is a historic town with the ruins of the Indus-valley civilization spread along the river Chenab. The whole area commands a panoramic view. A nice place to be in.

Mansar Lake
Situated 62 kms from Jammu, Mansar is a beautiful lake fringed by forest-covered hills, over a mile in length by half-a-mile in width. Besides being a popular excursion destination in Jammu, it is also a holy site, sharing the legend and sanctity of Lake Mansarovar. Newly weds consider it auspicious to perform three circumambulations (Parikarma) around the lake to seek the blessings of Sheshnag, the lord of serpents, whose shrine is located on its eastern bank. There are also some ancient temples on the lakes shores, which are visited by devotees in large numbers. Mansar is also ideal for boating for which the Tourism Department provides adequate facilities. For the convenience of visitors a well lit flagstone walkway has been laid all around the shores.
